Generally we experience two major teeth eruptions in our lives, when they erupt during infancy and later when your adult teeth emerge. Wisdom teeth usually come after these two phases, usually appearing between the ages of 17 – 25.
Functioning as large grinding teeth at the back four corners of your mouth, wisdom teeth are often inconsistent in terms of how many will actually emerge and how many you even have waiting to emerge. While the presence of wisdom teeth can go unnoticed for some patients, in many instances there is no room in the dental arch to accommodate for wisdom teeth which can lead to complications.

Dental impaction where the wisdom teeth fail to emerge from the gums
A tooth that does not completely emerge from the gum is often known as an impacted tooth. While some impacted teeth may not cause any complications, impacted teeth can put pressure on the surrounding teeth by growing into the other teeth. There are a number of different categories that impacted teeth can belong to, including Mesioangular and Vertical impaction. The impaction can also be in the bone or in the gum, which can influence the difficulty of the wisdom teeth’s extraction. Impacted teeth can be problematic for a number of reasons, including infection which can progress into tooth decay and gum infections, as well as difficulty bushing and discomfort.
Overcrowded teeth
For many of our patients their upper and lower arches have the desired number of teeth to provide an optimal dental function, as well as an aesthetically pleasing appearance. However before or after the wisdom teeth erupt they can put pressure on the surrounding teeth. If the pressure reaches a certain level of intensity then the other teeth can be forced to shift and move place in order to accommodate for the new teeth in the arch. This can cause complications in the appearance and function of your smile and may create the later need for orthodontic treatment.
Dental pain, swelling or infection
There are a number of conditions that can arise from impacted or emerged wisdom teeth, including dental pain and infections. The space created by the impacted teeth can create pockets in your gum which can become infected or collect bacteria. The soft tissues around the wisdom teeth, or the surrounding teeth if the wisdom teeth are overcrowding the arch, can also become irritated and sensitive.
We recommend impacted teeth are removed as early as possible since in younger patients the dental roots are not fully formed and the surrounding bone is softer. Taking a “wait and see approach” usually results in wisdom teeth that are harder to remove and with a longer healing time. Once we have examined your teeth with an x-ray our dental professionals can determine whether your wisdom teeth require removal or not.

When should my child start seeing the dentist?
We recommend your child starts visiting the dentist from an early age, preferably when they are around 7 years old.
What is the difference between conventional braces and Invisalign?
There are many differences between Invisalign and conventional braces. For example, with Invisalign you can straighten your teeth without anyone knowing as Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible. Invisalign aligners are also removable meaning you can brush and floss as you would normally – this is something you cannot do with conventional braces. Despite this, conventional braces can be a more suitable option for those with more subnational orthodontic concerns.
What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are widely considered the modern solution to missing teeth and dentures. Replace missing teeth with dental implants which act and feel like normal teeth. They consist of a titanium screw-like post which is implanted into the jawbone. The implant will then bond with your jawbone to provide stimulation and support for a dental crown or bridge.
What is a root canal?
The root canal is the space within the root of a tooth. Root canal treatment is recommended for patients with infected tooth pulps. The best indication of infection is severe dental pain or sensitivity.

My wisdom teeth are causing pain. Should I have them removed?
Because often modern jaws are not big enough to accommodate these extra teeth, in the majority of cases we do recommend they are removed. We recommend you come into our practice for a thorough examination to determine the path we take in ensuring your dental health.

How often should I visit the dentist for a dental check-up?
We recommend you visit our practice every 6 months for your dental check-up and fluoride treatment. This way minors dental issues can be addressed before they potentially become major problems.
